Theme of my campaign
Why even consider an old white man? Good question. I decided to run because Mayor Frey’s lack of good decision-making and leadership during the protests following the murder of George Floyd and the homeless crisis in the Minneapolis Parks were I believe can better fix the city, I will gladly support her/him.
My work will be to communicate with the entire city, negotiate with decision makers and heal Minneapolis.
We need to eliminate the civil service protections for the Minneapois Police department either through legislative action or charter change. Then we will need to make sure that everyone we hire for public safety shares the values of our city, anti-racism, anti-homophobia, anti-sexism, violence not as a first go to. We also will need people with alternative confict resolution skills and skills with dealing with mental health issues.
A focus will be to nurture and mentor young people to take leadership roles in our community. My staff will consist of people with passion and desire to make the world a better place. It will be a staff that looks like the city of Minneapolis and will work to empower the entire community. We will not work for the rich and powerful. The staff of the city needs to be more a part of the change that we will make. I will be a mayor for the whole city. Honest, transparent, listening and unrelenting in the cause of justice. I know our government, the tax system, the decision-making system, the implementation systems and the knowledge systems. I have the skills, experience and wisdom to fix what’s broken.
i am not afraid of being charged with class warfare. We identify places that actually take things away from the rich and the corporations and make the lives of people better.On a national level, this is Medicare for all, free college, progressive taxation wealth tax, etc. We need to identify these on the local level. Yes, taking the stadium for the homeless could be one of those, but it would have to be with a strategy to make it happen. I want to go after the stadium sales tax, perhaps re-purpose it toward funding things out of downtown.
How long has it been since you felt the government was on you’re side? Since you felt that decisions are in your interest? How long since city government listened and cared and responded to you? That’s what I want to, and more importantIy have the wisdom, the experience, the skills, the integrity the temperament to do, is fix this city. To be a good mayor, or council member you have to love it. It can’t be your job that you punch into, it has to give you joy, engage your creativity, and excite people around you. You can’t be worried about the next step on your political career.
The current mayor has crawled into a cave since his spanking. We need someone who will engage the whole community, who knows that the rich corporations and Minneapolis Foundation and the Itaska group and the other institutions of the 1 percent are not on our side. Someone who can bring all of us—Northside, Southside, SE, NE, whatever language you speak, whether your ancestors came to the junction of the two rivers in the last 10 years, or the last 10 thousand years—into our city government.
I am not on a career path, I am 72 years old, and I love this city. We are hurting, and I can be a force to heal and learn. I want to give back, I am ready to serve. Let’s fix problems, and create our visions as reality. Let’s make this our city.
